Tivat sits on the inner coast of the Bay of Kotor, sheltered by the Vrmac ridge to the north and the Lustica peninsula to the south. The town centre runs north from Pine Park along the waterfront promenade through the marina at Porto Montenegro to Donja Lastva, with the bus station, market hall and main banking strip a few blocks inland from the quay. The town's character changed dramatically with the opening of Porto Montenegro in 2009 on the site of the former Yugoslav navy base, which brought a high-end yacht-marina cluster, luxury hotels and an international fine-dining strip.

Tivat Airport is two kilometres south of the centre, the country's busiest in summer with charter flights from across Europe and Russia. The Lepetane ferry crosses the Verige strait at the bay's mid-point, halving the drive time to Herceg Novi and the western coast. The Centre stays busy year-round on a working calendar, with a strong tourist peak from late May through mid-September when the airport, marina and waterfront restaurants run at full capacity.
